Memorial Ceremony to Remember the Founder

In the sacred and profound mission of the Tathagata, serving humanity and the nation has always embodied the spirit of compassion, wisdom, selflessness, and altruism. This noble tradition has been illuminated, upheld, and passed down through generations of monks, nuns, and devout Buddhists.

Among the many revered elders, we cannot help but remember the late Venerable Elder Ngo Chan Tu (1901–1988), the Founder of Hoang Phap Pagoda. He recognized Hoc Mon as fertile ground for spiritual growth — a place where the seeds of Dharma could be sown and nurtured. Wherever he went, he left behind deep affection, broad vision, and unwavering dedication to continuing the Tathagata’s mission. His heart beat in rhythm with the hearts of all beings.

In the early days of 1957, he purchased six hectares of land and founded Hoang Phap Pagoda as a place for spiritual practice and the propagation of the Buddha's teachings. He supported the monastic community and guided lay Buddhists in their practice and learning. At the time, the temple consisted of a modest main hall, thatched roof, and earthen walls, which served as both his place of work and rest. Surrounded by an expansive and quiet forest, he led a simple, humble life that became the foundation for a new spiritual beginning on this once untouched land.

Amid years of hardship brought on by war, he devoted all his energy, resources, and compassion to the Dharma and the people. He raised orphans, engaged in social charity, supported the Buddhist Higher School, and compiled and printed scriptures to share the Dharma with others.

On the occasion of the 36th anniversary of his death, we look upon his portrait with deep reverence. The late Venerable Master was wholly devoted to spreading the Dharma and uplifting all sentient beings. His life was a living Dharma lesson, a true embodiment of compassion and service to both Buddhism and the nation. In all circumstances, Buddhism walks with the people, offering spiritual support and guiding souls toward virtuous, pure living. The wisdom of the Patriarch shines like a beacon, forever inspiring us to learn and follow in his footsteps.

Now, 36 years later, we live in the digital age — a 4.0 era filled with the rapid growth of the internet and social networks. In such a time, we must equip ourselves with wisdom and clarity. Let us cultivate discernment, stay mindful, and walk in the Buddha’s footsteps to avoid being swept away by worldly temptations. Let us embrace the Buddha’s teachings and hold firmly to our noble ideals.

These past 36 years have passed amidst a world full of storms and sorrows. Sentient beings remain trapped in the pursuit of wealth, fame, beauty, food, and comfort — fleeting pleasures mistaken for true happiness. Inspired by the will and aspiration of the Master and the monks, we are reminded to sow the seeds of Buddhism, helping all beings realize that life is but a dream. The past serves as a mirror for us to understand the present and shape the future.

Today, the temple has grown remarkably. From humble beginnings, it has become a beautiful, expansive sanctuary for study and spiritual practice, a spiritual home offering strong foundations for future generations. With talent, virtue, and unwavering dedication, the temple has embraced modern methods of sharing the Dharma. It skillfully adapts to society’s needs through diverse outreach and charitable efforts, continuously guiding others toward peace, truth, and beauty.

As of 2024, the temple has experienced three significant milestones: 1. A constant remembrance of the Founder’s immense grace. 2. The continuation and flourishing of his great work by his successor, Most Venerable Thich Chan Tinh, Head of Hoang Phap Pagoda. 3. A journey of perseverance and dedication, overcoming countless challenges so that the pagoda may thrive and shine, continuing the legacy of the revered Founder.

Over time, the temple has grown steadily, nurturing countless cherished memories and heartfelt dedications to the Dharma and to life itself. We always remind ourselves to reflect inwardly, cultivate our practice, and contribute even in the smallest ways, to the beauty of life and the Dharma. In doing so, we honor the legacy of the Master, our teachers, and our spiritual ancestors.
