Preventing Evils Early

Update: 29/03/2015
Preventing Evils Early King Milinda asked Bhikshu Nagasena: - I have heard that Buddhists usually prevent evils and causes of suffering. So why don’t they wait for its coming to extinguish it?

Preventing Evils Early

- Evils are not stopped immediately and good methods should\r\nbe practiced sooner to obtain benefits. It will be dangerous if it is let so\r\nlate!

\r\n\r\n

- Why is that?

\r\n\r\n

-  For example, if you wait for digging a well until it\r\nburns your body, which is appropriate to solve the thirst? It it right time to\r\ndrink?

\r\n\r\n

 - Do we have to dig a well before?

\r\n\r\n

- It is the same in practice. It is too late to cultivate after\r\nthe suffering, another example, until waiting to be hungry, you would order\r\nplough and sowing. Could the food rescue your hunger when it is harvested

\r\n\r\n

- They could not.

\r\n\r\n

- For another one, at the time you are protecting this country,\r\nyou think that: "Waiting until the enemy comes, I will train soldiers,\r\nforge weapons, train horses and elephants, and so on". Is that\r\nthinking appropriate?

\r\n\r\n

- This will be occupied.

\r\n\r\n

Similarly, the ones who are in practice know\r\nhow to do good deeds, to prevent bad things attain in good time. The\r\nBuddha taught:

\r\n\r\n

"Wise people always search for the benefits of\r\nbeing happy themselves; unlike that rice-seller. He does not walk on flat and\r\neasy road, but they choose bumpy and dangerous one. Until the axis and belt are\r\nbroken, they simply cried and groaned. Similar idiots who give up doing the\r\ngood but doing evils will have grievousend. It is too late to\r\nrepent."
