Repentance Ceremony (June 30th, Year of the Horse) | Hoang Phap Pagoda.
Update: 13/08/2026
The repentance ceremony at Hoang Phap Pagoda was attended by a large number of Buddhists at 18:00 on Wednesday, Aug. 12th, 2026. Before the ritual, Junior Thich Tam Hong, on behalf of the pagoda monks, preached the Dharma name “Abandon evil, do good” to all attendees.
The lecturer recounted a famous Zen anecdote involving Zen Master Daolin (Bird’s Nest) and the great poet Bai Juyi, in which the master skillfully summarized the teachings of the Buddhas of the three time periods:
"To avoid all evil,
To cultivate good,
To purify one's mind:
This is the teaching of the Buddhas."
This verse serves as a guiding principle for practitioners, encouraging them to cultivate the right view and distinguish between wholesome and unwholesome deeds. One should not neglect small acts of goodness nor dismiss minor acts of evil as insignificant, for small deeds—whether good or bad—are like accumulating drops of water: drop by drop, the vessel eventually fills.
The monk urged the attendees to cease committing evil acts and to wholeheartedly perform good deeds while diligently practicing to bring the mind to a state of purity. The myriad methods of practice all share the same goal: to guide practitioners toward a life of peace and true freedom, enabling them to gradually awaken to the Buddha’s insight.
The repentance ceremony closed in the participants’ joy.
