The 1st Three-Jewel Refuge ceremony in 2026 at Hoang Phap pagoda
Update: 11/04/2026
Nearly 500 good men and believing women returned to Hoang Phap Pagoda to participate in receiving the Three-Jewel Refuge ceremony, being an important ritual on the path of practice for lay disciples in the 1st Refuge Ceremony on April 12th, 2026.
Returning to refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha in the Three-Jewel refuge ceremony, practitioners will be guided to the methods to escape the suffering and distress of this life. In there, the precepts are the foundation in the order leading to concentration and wisdom. Thanks to the Three-Refuge and Five-Precepts, Buddhists will gain the correct understanding that precepts benefit both oneself and others, helping them to be more cautious and mindful in their thoughts, words, and actions. Therefore, taking refuge in the Three Jewels and upholding the five ethical principles of a true Buddhist — refraining from killing, stealing, adultery, lying, and consuming alcohol or intoxicating substances — will help practitioners find peace in the precepts’ protection and wholesome dharma, leading to a life of joy and deliverance.
The Three-Jewel refuge ceremony began at 7:00 a.m. The followers gathered in the dharma hall to listen and learn about the proper demeanors of a Buddhist, such as bowing and prostrating. In the ceremony, Abbot of Hoang Phap Pagoda, Junior Thich Tam Truong explained the repentance ritual before taking refuge in the Three Jewels and observing the Five Precepts. Then, he preached the purpose, meaning, and benefits in the Three-Jewel refuge and complying with Five Precepts.
The refuge ceremony and receiving Five Precepts officially took place in a solemn and peaceful atmosphere in the witness of the Sangha at 2:00 p.m. The ceremony concluded with the joy of the attendees. Before leaving the temple, all Buddhists received Certificates of Refuge and dharma book gifts from the Organizers.
