The Boatman of Compassion

The Boatman of Compassion

I have changed greatly in both my thinking and my outlook on life. The harder I study the Dharma, the more firmly I believe in the path I have chosen, following in the footsteps of the Buddha, living for the benefit of myself and others. I hope readers may find some encouragement here to change themselves, to rise above difficulties, and to live wholeheartedly. Living like a vast boat of Compassion carries people across the sea of suffering.

Though the worldly road is full of storms,

With mindful steps, we pass by gently.

These were the words I read in the book Buddhism Saved My Life by the Most Venerable Abbot of Hoang Phap Monastery. I have read many of his works. His books do not use lofty language or ornate prose, nor do they dwell heavily on philosophy. Everything is expressed simply and gently, yet infused with profound meaning and deep compassion. Reading them feels as though I am sitting beside him, directly receiving his teachings. Through those humble pages, I gradually came to understand the Way, to understand cultivation. From there, I chose the path of returning to the truth, finding joy in transforming myself instead of searching for fleeting happiness outside.

Though I am a disciple from afar, through the guidance of Master Tâm Hưng I have always received the Venerable Abbot’s teachings through his unassuming words, his modest and gentle lifestyle, and his wholehearted dedication in every deed. We always look to him and learn from his life: a simple and compassionate teacher, who seemed to forget himself entirely in order to live for others, bringing peace and benefit to all beings.

My happiness overflowed yesterday when, after many years, I was finally able to bow in reverence before the Most Venerable Abbot of Hoang Pháp Monastery, right under the roof of the temple where I am practicing a branch of Hoang Phap in Thanh Hoa, the Yen Phap Monastery.

Seeing him still healthy, his compassionate smile radiating, I felt a deep joy and even greater confidence in the path I have chosen. I silently vowed to practice diligently and to devote myself wholeheartedly to serving the Triple Gem, just as my master and the Abbot have instructed.

I sincerely pray that the Buddhas will always extend their blessings, granting the Most Venerable Abbot abundant health and wisdom, so that he may continue his sacred mission without rest forever steering the Boat of Compassion to carry countless beings across the river of delusion.
