Nowadays, Ulambana is no longer a ceremony for Buddhists in countries but spreading around the world preaching human values and compassion to everyone. Gratitude and expression are the cultural beauty, the ethics of people to parents. Ulambana is the time for people expressing their filial duty.
In that spirit, on July 23, 2017, the Ulambana ceremony was solemnly held at the public conference hall (Du Dan Le Duong), Taipei City, Taiwan. Despite challenges and hardship in daily life, overseas Vietnamese here wholeheartedly joined the ceremony to express their gratitude and pray for parents. At 10 o'clock in the morning, monks and nuns came to join Ulambana ceremony that opened with the speech from the organizer, then followed the explanation of the meaning of rose in Ulambana. The environment got calm, silent with deep consideration, home-sick sorrow and tears when the music was played. Senior Venerable Thich Chan Tinh delivered the Dharma talk about the story of Moggallana saving his mother from the realm of hungry ghost and explained the meaning of Ulambana. This meaningful story is a great example of filial duty of children to parents. The program closed with Ulambana sutra chanting as usual.
During the ceremony, there were many performances as song “Bong Hong Cai Ao†from the voice of Venerable Thich Tam Tuong and his saxophone, song “Me Oi Mai Con Ve†from singer An Thien Vy, song “Dao Lam Con†from singer Saka Truong Tuyen, song “Sa Mua Giong†from singer Lam Bao Phi.
In the afternoon, the Senior Venerable and clergy delegation held Buddhism refuging rite for Vietnamese aspirants in Taiwan. He explained fundamental Buddhism name/activities as taking refuge in Triratna, upÄsaka (male lay Buddhist), upÄsika (female lay Buddhist)...
In the evening, the Senior Venerable lectured at Hoa Huong ashram in Taichung. He would like to help Buddhists getting achievement in practicing with the right way based on Buddha’s teachings instead of the wrong/superstitious methods that lead to nowhere.
