Buddhist News of Ven. Thich Chan Tinh
Visiting Hollywood and Delivering Dharma Talk at Hien Nhu Tinh That, California, US
Update: 08/10/2017
On Oct 06, 2017, Senior Venerable Thich Chan Tinh and monks from Hoang Phap Sangha left North Carolina for California, the last state on the preaching trip in US this time.
In the morning of Oct 07, 2017, the delegation visited Hollywood in the city of Los Angeles, California. It is known that Hollywood was originally a sign of a land, an identity and symbol of American culture. Hollywood is now known as the heart of the US entertainment and movie industry. The delegation then visited Griffith Observatory on Mount Hollywood.
In the afternoon, The Senior Venerable had a Dharma talk to the ashram at Hien Nhu Tinh That, whose abbess is Nun Thanh Dieu Phap. In the lecturing, he talked about the five hindrances (nÄ«varaṇa) mentioned in Anguttara Nikaya including sensuous desire (KÄmacchanda), anger/ill will (VyÄpÄda), sloth and torpor (ThÄ«na-middha), restlessness and remorse (Uddhacca-kukkucca), and sceptical doubt (VicikicchÄ). These are the five factors making our mind be covered, tied and defiled. Understanding these risks, Buddhists should listen to, think of and practice Buddha’s teachings to have happiness in life. Such happiness is more likely the joy of people who are free from debt, illness, and slavery, and can preserve his/her property after passing dangerous desert.
