“Applied Dharma Propagation” Class - Dharma Talk: “The Appearance of the Buddha” by Junior Thich Tam Nguyet
Update: 30/04/2025
Day 1 of the Practice Series: “Pure and Harmony” on April 30, 2025 (Lunar: April 3, Year of the Wood Snake - At Ty): Amidst the busyness of modern life, a day off becomes a precious opportunity for individuals to return inward—to nourish both body and mind, and to practice living with mindfulness and harmony. On this meaningful day, as we joyfully welcome Vesak Week and commemorate National Reunification Day, the mass gathered in a spirit of deep gratitude to practice and dedicate the merits of cultivation to the virtuous ancestors and spiritual practitioners who came before us.
In the morning, after the assembly settled into the Dharma Hall, the masses were blessed to receive a Dharma talk from Venerable Thich Tam Nguyet, Deputy Abbot of Hoang Phap Pagoda, on the topic: “The Appearance of the Buddha.”
More than 2,600 years ago, the Buddha appeared in the world like a radiant jewel shining in the darkness, illuminating the path for those who had lost their way. His teachings, likened to nourishing rains, awakened and nurtured the seeds of wisdom and liberation within all sentient beings. As recorded in the Anguttara Nikaya, the Buddha’s appearance was a great blessing to humanity-bringing happiness, peace, and compassion to the world.
The Buddha challenged the deterministic views on karma held by contemporaneous religious leaders, such as Nigantha Naṭaputta, who taught that present suffering is solely the result of past actions and cannot be altered. In contrast, the Buddha emphasized that liberation is attainable through personal effort, without reliance on a supreme being.
One of the key principles of his teaching is self-reliance: liberation is possible in this very life by abandoning unwholesome actions and cultivating wholesome ones, ultimately realizing Nirvana – a state of complete cessation of suffering. The Buddha’s Dharma gradually reshaped Indian society’s rigid ideologies. He revealed that enlightenment is not limited by caste, birth, or divine intervention. Rather, anyone who earnestly practices the Noble Eightfold Path can attain liberation.
Through this profound Dharma talk, Venerable Thich Tam Nguyet helped the audience deeply appreciate the sacred significance of the Buddha’s appearance in this world. His life and teachings opened a practical path toward true happiness, peace, and joy for all beings. In the afternoon, the community continued their practice and deepened their understanding of the Dharma under the compassionate guidance of the Monks.
