On the afternoon of June 27th, 2024, Junior Thich Tam Tri - Deputy Abbot of Hoang Phap Pagoda had a summary lecture of Dhammapada Sutra for monks and Buddhists during the rain season retreat every Thursday.
The Junior explained 11 verses in the mind's Chapter in his sharing session:
The Buddha taught that greed, anger, and ignorance are three basic minds of unwholesomeness; Three basic minds of goodness are non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion. Minds’ states are not born naturally, they all have their causes and conditions. In the sutra named A non-Buddhist rambling practitioner (Aññatitthiyasutta) of the Anguttara Nikaya, the Buddha clearly taught: A greedy mind is a great sin but the leaving is slow; Anger is a small sin, but getting rid of anger is quick; A ignorance mind is a great sin, but the leaving is slow.
The mind of greed arises because of what cause or condition? Because the form is attractive and the mind does not dwell in the Dharma.
Anger arises because of what cause or condition? Due to obstacles and the mind not residing in the Dharma.
The mind of ignorance arises because of what cause or condition? Because the mind does not reside in the Dharma
When these causes and conditions exist, the three minds of greed, anger, and ignorance arise.
The monk reminds a well-cultivated practitioner to clearly recognize his mind by a thorough analysis of the state and level of the mind over 11 poems. To achieve that, practitioners must study and practice the Dharma to achieve good results. People who study Buddhism need to focus on the truth, and practice the Dharma correctly, they will have peace in the present and the next lives until they enter into Nirvana.
