Buddhism Marriage Rite at Hoang Phap Pagoda

Nowadays, Buddhists come to pagoda not only for praying/paying homage to Buddha, but also for studying Dharma and joining Buddhism activities. Previously, people used to come to pagoda for some simple and basic needs as praying for the peace of the living and the salvation for the death. Today, people come to pagoda for other affairs as new house settlement, opening new business or wedding, one of the most important milestone in life.

Carrying out Buddhism marriage rite at pagoda itself is the bridge linking spiritual and secular life, making the harmonization between the traditional culture and Buddhism spirit.

After offering incense to pay homage to Buddha, representatives of the groom and bride families appealed for the witness of the clergymen and then the couple exchanged wedding rings. Senior Venerable Abbot Thich Chan Tinh, on behalf of the clergy witnesses gave them the lecturing about marriage etiquette to the young couple.

In Vietnamese, Hang Thuan means Buddhism marriage that has a special meaning for families living in peace and happiness. Additionally, the Venerable shared about Buddha’s teaching regarding the dos and dons in marriage life to build up the Home-Sweet-Home, filial piety to parents, pregnancy and raising kids. Families living aligned with the meaning of “Hang Thuan” are always happy.

In Buddhism, Buddha teaches us the Kàya Sàmaggi, six good terms for harmony in the community including:

* Peaceful behavior,

* Peaceful words to avoid conflict

* Common sense

* Practice together

* Solving problem together

* Sharing benefit together

A family living aligned with Kàya Sàmaggi will create a happy realm where spouses listen to, respect and take care of each other. Children are dutiful, obedient and grateful to the elderly. Adult in the family shoulde ducate and take care of the juniors. Applying the six good terms for harmony and Buddhist five precepts will help buildup good and virtuous family members, happy and well-to-do families, and prosperous/ advanced society.

At the end of the marriage rite, the Senior Venerable sent the just-marriage spouse the Buddhism marriage certificate and wedding gift.
