Buddhism Wedding Ceremony

This morning Sep 10, 2017 (Jul 20, lunar calendar), clergy men have come to the main shrine in testimony of the Buddhism wedding ceremony of young couple, groom Tran Huu Khoa (religious name: Thien Hanh) and bride Huynh Thi On.

Traditionally, marriage is the foremost importance taking ultimate attention from parents as this is the start for a new era in life of young couples, their children. Family is the cell of society. Good family helps contribute a happy and prosperous society while it is necessary to have progressive members to form a good family. This is the benefit that Buddhism wedding ceremony brings to couples. In that spirit, under the testimony of monks, the ceremony solemnly and formally takes place.

After the rite offering incense and praying to Buddha, it is the appealing from the couple’s families to clergy delegation for wedding rituals. On behalf of Hoang Phap sangha, Venerable Thich Tam Hue has approved the request.

Next, the bride and groom sincerely pay tribute and perform mutual respect by kowtowing Triratna, parents and each other.

One of integral item on this great day is wedding ring. During the ceremony, representative of clergy men reads the meaning of wedding ring. Although it is a symbol of betrothal, it brings a great value into marriage life, both now and in the future. With such great significance, in the witness of monks and the two families, after taking marriage oath (as per Buddha’s teachings in Sigalovada Sutra), bride and groom hand over the wedding rings, officially become husband and wife.

After that, Venerable Thich Tam Hue gives his advice to the just-marriage couple on this important event. From the definition of Buddhism wedding ceremony, he points out that to have sustained happiness and true love, it is necessary for young couple and others to have daily right view and right conduct as stated in Kàya sàmaggi (six good terms for harmony):

* Peaceful behavior

* Peaceful words to avoid conflict

* Common sense

* Practice together

* Solving problem together

* Sharing benefit together

These themes are the corner stone for building home-sweet-home, the important step for us building happy marriage and fulfilling relevant duties as family member.

At the end of the ceremony, the Venerable hands over wedding gift and Buddhism marriage certificate to the couple.
