Summer Retreat
Ceremony of Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels at the 2026 Summer Retreat "Life's Slope" on the Thursday afternoon.
Update: 10/07/2026
Participating in the afternoon essay contest themed "Life's Slope" at this year’s summer retreat, the participants wrote about their own genuine experiences. The contest gave the writers the opportunity to reflect on their own journeys of growth after the arduous and challenging slopes of life.
In the evening, the Refuge Ceremony was solemnly held under the witness of the monks and in the presence of over 1,000 participants. Among them, more than 300 participants registered to take refuge in the Three Jewels during this retreat.
By taking refuge in the Three Jewels, participants officially become Buddhists, always returning to rely on the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha in all circumstances. Towards a noble spiritual life, practitioners skillfully comply with five precepts of a Buddhist: abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, or intoxicants. Abbot Thích Tâm Trường performed the repentance ceremony for the three karmic actions of body, speech, and mind to all young attendees - which were created by ignorance from beginningless time until now - vowing to purify body and mind in order to receive the precepts.
Representing the monks, Abbot Thích Tâm Trường transmitted the Three Refuges and Five Precepts to the participants and gave a meaningful Dharma talk. He reminded them of "Eight Good Things about complying with Three Refuges and Five Precepts," encouraging the youth to always respect their grandparents and parents; diligently attend the temple retreats, close with virtuous people, comply with five precepts to build a peaceful and happy life.
The Refuge Ceremony in the Summer Retreat concluded successfully in the joy of the participants and closed the fifth day of beneficial practice.
