On the 3rd day in the 101st Retreat of Dec. 25th, 2023 Senior Thich Tri Hue, Standing Member of the Central Dharma Propagation Board, Abbot of Phap Tang pagoda, HCMC preached a Dharma talk named How do lay people practice to attain Dharma? in Wheel Dharma Building's Main Hall.
Many people have the notion how can one realize the Dharma, or attain sainthood in this Dharma-ending age? This is a misleading concept. Enlightenment is not related to three periods of correct Dharma, semblance Dharma, or ending Dharma but depends on the diligent efforts of each practitioner. Above three stages refer to the ups and downs in the stages of time.
To attain enlightenment is thanks to the Buddha's teachings for all sentient beings in the understanding of dharma. All living beings who understand and practice His teachings correctly will achieve enlightenment. Understanding the Buddha's teachings, practitioners open their minds towards deliverance. Achieving enlightenment is obtaining one of four holy fruits that worldly people can obtain. The Buddha taught humans and gods in Three realms are more likely to achieve these fruits than other realms thanks to their higher awareness. Four stages are Sotāpanna(stream-enterer), Sakadāgāmi(once-returner), Anāgāmi(non-returner),and Arahant.
All conditioned dharma are impermanent, worldly happiness is unstable, not real. True happiness is the understanding mind, super wisdom (obtained by attainment). Saint fruits will gain thanks to Buddha Shakyamuni teachings; when circulating in Dharma realms, the mind has the dominant force. No matter which method a practitioner follows that must transform its mind of greed, anger, and ignorance. Faith and wisdom are very important in achieving enlightenment, so listening to dharma and studying it is very necessary. Lay people need to correctly understand letting go: absolutely let go of the attachment mind; let go form states depending on conditions without denying responsibility to family and society.
How to practice to attain enlightenment? it is the method of contemplation by its mind, or no matter what method of practice, it must practice mindfulness, get rid of the afflictions of greed, anger, and ignorance that is to gain achievement.
