Dharma talk Learning Buddhism should know in the 100th Seven-Day Retreat
Update: 09/09/2023
On the third day in the 100th Seven-Day Retreat of Sep. 08th, 2023 Junior Thich Tam Duoc, monks of Hoang Phap pagoda (teaching Application Buddhism class via Zoom) had a dharma Talk on the title Learning Buddhism should know.
From the sermon, the monk mentioned the content of the lesson "Learning Buddhism should know, know unknown truths, and know more clearly the known truths".
By illustrating stories of the Buddha during His lifetime, the monk preached the Four Noble Truths. The truth about suffering is the sufferings of birth, old age, illness, and death; suffering from separation, or facing the enemies..., five aggregates are suffering, we should accept the truth, face the pain and practice letting go. The truth about the origin of suffering is ignorance and craving. The truth about the cessation of suffering is tranquil Nirvana. The path leading to suffering cessation is the middle path of Noble Eightfold Path, which is precepts, concentration and wisdom. The World-Honored One realized the Four Noble Truths without a teacher who only taught sufferings, causes, cessation, and ways. We are lucky, have enough conditions to learn about Buddhadharma. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels, we should vow to comply with five precepts, abandon evil and do good; Buddhists should obey precepts first, then prevent us from making mistakes. From this preaching, he encouraged and guided listeners to learn, understand, and apply the Buddha's teachings in daily life.
Lay people need to cultivate two dharma: practice and lucidity. The practice is giving alms, complying with precepts, and diligence; the lucidity is thinking, reflecting on impermanence, suffering, and non-self. Each practitioner should try to practice well, become an example for children, grandchildren and family members.
We should learn the truth. The World-Honored One attained supreme enlightenment because he loved and respected the truth. In each incarnation, He always sought to understand the truth. As disciples of Buddhism, we should study the Buddha, follow His example, try to make the most of being diligent while we are still healthy, young, and lucid; meanwhile, we should avoid small evil deeds, and try to do small good ones.
The Dharma talk ended with the joy of the participants.
