Dharma Talk "Love Your Kids Properly" - 85th Seven-Day Retreat
Update: 23/04/2017
In the morning of April 22, 2017 (Mar 26, lunar calendar), the last day of the retreat, Senior Venerable Thich Thien Minh, abbot of Buu Quang pagoda, District 9, had the Dharma talk to the ashram with the topic "Love your kids properly".
Parents often love their kids instinctively. Nevertheless that kind of love is not enough to bring-up the child. In fact, loving our kids properly is an art. Especially for Buddhists, we should apply Buddha's teachings in loving and breeding our children so that they can become helpful and engaged citizen for family and society in the future.
Since a child, kids should be educated with etiquette as good manners, nice behaviors to parents, grand-parents, elderly and others. Baby’s mind is more likely the white paper ready for writing. They often imitate people around, therefore, parents should skillfully teach them about good behaviors, how to respect others, and courteousness… via good examples and education. Besides, parents should frequently take children to pagoda to learn from clergy men, listen to Buddhism educational/moral stories of respecting for the truth, obeying parents, growing the compassion to sentient beings, taking refuge in Triratna and preserving the Five-Precepts. Family has got the great influence in forming and developing children’s personality, so grand/parents should be the great examples for children to follow.
When children happen to make some mistakes, parents should not try to cover the faults, thinking that it is the good way protecting them from hurts. In fact, this is the myth. Such behaviors are the fast track driving the kids to evil/sinful way deeper and deeper.
Parents should pay close attention to children’s behaviors in learning, psychology, and reactions, teach them how to behave properly and be self-confident, love the family and others, create the close relationship between parents and children. At the right age, parents should give kids guideline and orientation in choosing the right occupations. Last but not least, giving proper advices and taking care of children’s marriage are the noble duties that parents have to fulfill as per Buddha’s teachings.
In more than an hour of sharing, the Senior Venerable gave the practitioners precious lessons of nurturing and educating children so that they can be happy parents with dignified children.
