On the fifth day of the 102nd Retreat of May 02nd, 2024 Lecturer of Lam Dong Buddhist High School and Hue Quang Han-Nom Studies Institute, Senior Thich Nguyen Hien, Abbot of Vinh Minh Tu Vien pagoda (Duc Trong, Lam Dong) came to the Retreat and preached a dharma talk named The lineage of Vietnamese Pure Land Sect to the mass.
A Sect to be established must meet three conditions: teachings; Based on what Scriptures? Handed-down tradition. Vietnamese Buddhism has no inheritance from the Patriarch, only the inheritance of teachings. In other words, there is no inheritance of the Pure Land sect in the sense of the First Patriarch inheriting the Patriarch but there is a special inheritance of teachings (Pure Land teachings).
In fact, there is no Pure-Land Sect in Vietnam, there is only the reciting Buddha's name as a way to practice, pray for rebirth in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This doctrine was maintained even earlier than China during the dynasties: Ding; Le, Ly, Tran…. There were historical periods when Vietnam fell into a gloomy period, but Pure Land teachings developed more and more, even spreading the mass by other faiths and other religions such as Hoa Hao, Cao Dai, Buu Son Ky Huong, Tu An Hieu Nghia,…
From his sermon, the Senior encouraged the listeners to keep their faith, diligently recite the Buddha's name, and return to their pure nature
