Hair Shaving to Leaving-Home Ceremony

On May 12th 2015 (Lunar March 25th Goat Year), Hoang Phap pagoda held a ceremony of shaving hair to good men, witnessed and attended by monks and nearly 2,000 Buddhists in the 79th seven day retreat.

Leading to future generation is a sacred responsibility to\r\nshow gratitude to the Buddha. This tranferring process has been gone through 26\r\ncenturies since the Buddha’s period. From this inner wish, annually Hoang Phap\r\nPagoda holds the hair shaving to the good men having aspiration which is\r\nfollowing the path of leaving the world. To have hair shaved, good men must\r\ncomplete at least 6 months on cultivating at the pagoda. In this time, the\r\nmonks will consider the morality, behavior, and manners of each one.\r\nFurthermore, they should learn by their heart the reciting, and especially do\r\nnot catch the forbidden sections of the leaving home one.

After coming and conducting the rite of offering incense to\r\nthe Buddha at the hall, representatives from precept followers had an offering\r\nword vow of leaving home. Ven. Sen. Thich Chan Tinh, abbot of Hoang Phap pagoda\r\nagreed and promised an approval, concurrently also gave advice that establishes\r\nthe sect to them.

Good men are the ones who have good senses, enormous blesses\r\nand causations. Though being young, they recognized the impermanence, ephemera\r\nof the world soon so that they could expect to release. They are not the ones\r\nwith mediocre wisdom can leave home, but having aspiration and kind mind to\r\ncreature beings; sacrifice and determination heading on the enlightenment to\r\nrelease.

Leaving home is being out of home, suffering, and three\r\nrealms. Being out of home is cutting of the sentiment of family, relatives to\r\nspread sentiment on creature beings. Being out of trouble is breaking with\r\ngreed, hatred, delusion due to cultivating precepts, meditation, and wisdom.\r\nMonk differs from layman by precepts and behavior. Thus, as one leaving home to\r\nbecome a monk, he should bind in mind and body, improve behavior precepts.\r\nBeing out of realms is being out of sensuality, form, and formlessness realm.\r\nOnes who want to be like that must have perseverance in breaking with suffering\r\nin order to attain nirvana.

One leaving home ought to live worthily with his aspiration\r\nthat will make monk’s team prosperous, Buddhism immortal. Should he not be\r\nharmful to his colleagues? Releasing cultivating needs the determination, will,\r\nand fortitude to overcome difficulties and challenges. Monks are one being in\r\ncharge of widely proclaiming the Buddhist- truth, not the ones expecting to\r\ncome in for the life’s desire. Therefore, they should live without desire, and\r\ndo not catch in five yearnings: money, appearnce, reputation, eating, sleeping.

After giving the precious preach, the Sen. Ven. conducted\r\nthe rite of shaving hair to good men. Then, He explained about three verses\r\nwere read through the rite so that they could cultivate and practice.

 Ending the ceremony, they got their religious name and\r\ngifts from the abbot. The ceremony ended in joy of every one.
