Before the rite, Junior Thich Tam Khac, monks of the pagoda gave a dharma talk named Many desires being suffering; Pure land being joyful.
By the actual stories of Buddha's teachings in the sutras, the monk preached about the impermanence of all things in life that the body is impermanent is what we need to realize. All things are governed by karma; sickness, life span, suffering, etc, are the results of each individual's creation due to karmic habits, or accumulated karma from many previous lives that one has caused bad karma in the past, lead to pains in the present and the future.
The image of the Buddha passing to the four-gate citadel has opened the way to liberation, peace, and freedom from all world's sufferings for sentient beings. As Buddhists, we should believe deeply, vow earnestly, and practice diligently with the chosen path. Pure Land practitioners should recite the name of Amitabha Buddha while walking, standing, lying down, sitting with an unchanging mind until that one passes away, he will be taken to the Western world of Ultimate Bliss by Amitabha Buddha. The most important thing, practitioners need to make a vow after each time of practice to add more willpower, and diligent vows on the path of deliverance.
After the Dharma talk, the mass entered the penitential ritual as usual.
