The speech “Examine yourself!” in 88th Seven-Day Retreat

The Sangha of Hoang Phap Pagoda, Junior Ven. Thich Tam Luan had a dharma talk on the theme “Examine yourself!” to the mass in the 88th Seven-Days Retreat on May 12th, 2018 (lunar Mar. 27th, Year of Dog).

Everyone always loves their beauty and hopes they are beautiful in the others’ sight. Everyday, we often look in the mirror for dust on face and body; but they rarely notice in their mind. Our mind in long time get much dirty that needs to be cleaned and washed.

In society that money is appreciated, people easily lose the values of morality. People are ready to rob others’ life in the direct or indirect ways then attach to be guilty. Buddha taught that this current world exists wars and violence because the human’s mind of greediness, anger, ignorance accumulated in the past.

We should reconsider to recognize the right or wrong before thinking and acting. In life, we always spend much time on preparing necessary items for our trip or journey before the journey, but nobody prepares their vital luggage for our important route, which is the one of birth and death.

We can’t know how many years for a fate. How long of time will maintain to  prepare our luggage? Thinking ourselves what things have we done? Where will we leave in future? Each of us should chose the best answer.

Bringing happiness for others means that will make joyful ourselves. Therefore, we should be accustomed to the tolerance. Open our heart, giving up, abandon one ego, smiling to all difficulties. Learning the conduct from a new bride who has just joined her husband’s house. She is always careful, afraid of making mistakes, hard working, and mindfulness on each second.

Try to improve ourselves. Enriching spiritual life is the cultivation of compassion, support of society, train morality and wisdom, as well as keep on belief in Triratna, solemn precepts, etc, so that when having each step on the enlightenment path, we feel peacefulness and enlightenment.

Over one-hour preaching, he helps the mass recognize the good that should be increased and the bad that should be corrected for diligence which helps gain good results in cultivating.
