Update: 21/08/2018
On August 19th, 2018 (July 9th Dog Year), Tieu Dao Pagoda solemnly hold the Ullambana Festival.
Response to the invitation from Junior Venerable Thich Tam Tinh - Member of the Board of Directors of Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam-Quang Ninh Province- The Abbot of Tieu Dao Pagoda, Venerable Thich Thanh Van - Vice Director and Secretary of the Board of Directors of Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam-Hoanh Bo district and the sangha came to Tieu Dao Pagoda to attend the lecture on: "The meaning of Ullambana Sutra".
Ullambana Sutra has two parts, one is Ullambana Sutra, the other is “Showing Gratitude to One’s Parents Sutra”. The later tells about the nurture of parents who from pregnancy to baby birth suffer many hard work. After raising a child from baby until adult, a mother always cares of her kid.
"Although growing up, you are still my child
All my life, I keep on following you forever "
Ullambana Sutra tells about the story of Maudgalyayana. He was one of the most super-natural power disciples of the Buddha, but he could not save his dead mother, named Thanh De, was a dying ghost (because she had made too much evil deeds when she had been alive). Therefore, Maudgalyayana told the Buddha to find a way to save his mother and the Buddha taught:
"Because your mother did serious karmas, although you have mysterious power, you cannot save your mother. To save your mother, especially the full-moon day of July, you need the help from the power of Venerables in ten directions." Maudgalyayana listened the Buddha’s teachings and saved Mrs. Thanh De.
"Since then, every year
Holding the anniversary of parents’ grace
Ullambana Sutra spreads quickly
To follow his gratitute payment in the future".
After the lecture, Buddhists together chanted Ullambana Sutra to transfer their blessing for current parents, and pass-away parents to be reborn in Pure Land.
