Dharma Talk: “Teaching Mother to Recite the Buddha’s Name as an Act of Filial Piety” Delivered by the Most Thích Nhật Hỷ at the 109th Seven-Day Retreat.
Update: 02/09/2026
On the fourth day of the retreat, September 5, 2026, the Most Thích Nhật Hỷ-member of the Executive Council, Deputy Head of the Director Board, and Head of the Propagation Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in HCMC, and Abbot of Phật Quang Pagoda (Vĩnh Long), delivered a Dharma talk entitled “Teaching Mother to Recite the Buddha’s Name as an Act of Filial Piety.”
By detailed preaching on examples of filial piety—from the World-Honored One’s sublime acts of gratitude across many lifetimes to the story of "Monk Crab" skillfully guiding his mother to the faith through the recitation of "Namo Amitabha Buddha," and the spirit of supreme filial piety shown by Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana—the Most's teachings left a profound impression on the listeners, deeply moving them with these noble acts of filial gratitude.
The most advised that to practice filial piety fully, Buddhists must encourage their parents to take refuge in the Three Jewels, recite the Buddha's name, and practice spiritually. This journey toward the light of wisdom and compassion helps practitioners transform greed, hatred, and ignorance to attain peace and freedom from suffering.
In closing the Dharma talk, he emphasized that expressing filial gratitude through one's own spiritual practice—emulating the pious virtues of the Buddha and the Noble Sangha—should not be limited to the Ullambana season but must be nurtured and practiced throughout a practitioner's whole life.
