Dharma Talk: "The Art of Dharma Gleaning" Delivered by Venerable Nun Thich Nu Nhu Lan at the 109th Seven-Day Retreat.

On the sixth day of the retreat, September 7, 2026, Ven. Nun Thich Nu Nhu Lan—Deputy Chief of the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) in Dong Thap Province, Deputy Chief of the VBS Nun Branch in Dong Thap Province, and Abbess of Hung Thien Pagoda—delivered a Dharma talk entitled "The Art of Dharma Gleaning."

In her talk, the Ven. Nun explained the art of spiritual gleaning—a method of cultivation perfectly suited for lay practitioners occupied with the hectic demands of worldly life.

Drawing on the image of a farmer patiently gathering stray stalks of rice along the fields to fill a basket, she encouraged busy Buddhists to adopt this "gleaning" approach: making the most of every fleeting moment throughout the day to maintain mindfulness, live with awareness, and put the Buddha’s teachings into practice. 

In doing so, wherever and whenever we happen to be, that place transforms into a solemn ashram for cultivation. This allows practitioners to accumulate merit bit by bit, harmonizing the spiritual and the worldly. As a result, Pure Land practitioners can find peace and equanimity amidst impermanence, remaining steadfast in Faith, Vow, and Practice on their journey toward the Pure Land. This represents the ultimate significance of the art of dharma gleaning.
