Dharma Talk “Ullmabana – the Filial Piety Season” – 92nd Seven-Day Retreat

In the morning of August 25th, 2019 (July 25th, LC), Ven. Thich Quang Hanh, the member of the government office of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, secretary-general of Vietnam Buddhist Institute Ruling Assembly in HCMC has a dharma talk on the title of “Ullmabana – the Filial Piety Season” to all the 92nd retreat course participants.

According to popular idea, July in Lunar Calendar is the worst month of the year, people normally do some good things to avoid their unluckiness. However, July in Buddhist idea is the good month to the monks dharma-age adding, and also the time to remind posterity and children about their duty in piety-showing. In a wider meaning, Ullambana is not just the pious season but the season of showing gratitude to the four greatest kinds in one’s life: the kind of parent, of teacher, of the nation, and of all living beings. Nothing but practice, hard-practice can repay these gratitudes.

By this, he shares about the proper way to repay parent’s kindness in the Buddhist spirit.

First, showing gratitude doesn’t mean only material things support but guiding and driving a parent to the Buddhist practice, to reach the goal of everlasting liberation.

Second, if living-parent still keep a lot of bad habits which cause suffering in future we must take the Buddhist skillful means to drive them back to the moral way and taking

To do this, the Buddhist first should be a wholehearted practitioner, be honest in the Buddha words applying to fulfill one’s morality and knowledge, then he can help his parent no matter in present or passed.
