Junior Thich Tam Trinh, Monks of Hoang Phap pagoda had a dharma talk named “I owe you an apology, mom...” to Buddhists before the rite.
The monk preached about his emotional memories from his childhood to growing up in his family, as well as taking care of his mother when she was sick in her last days. Then, he recalled the filial piety in the previous life of Buddha Shakyamuni, how to show the pious to parents according to the Buddha's teachings in the sutras. Through that, he reminded all listeners to remember their parents' kindness, love, respect and show gratitude while they are still alive so that we can still feel happy when Ullambana season comes, because we have lived the filial piety of a true child, even if we have to pin red, pink or white flowers on our chest.
After the Dharma talk, the mass entered the penitential ritual as usual.
