The film has had a great echo and deep impression to all classes in\r\nthe society. After being successful in the film “Path to Enlightenment,â€\r\nHoang Phap Pagoda continues to make a film named“Going back to Enlightenment.â€
“Going back to Enlightenment†is a film about stories of the\r\nBuddha and disciples in the Order of Nuns. Details in the film are based on\r\nreal stories written in Nikaya as well as in Sanskrit sutra. Through the\r\nfilm, viewers can partly imagine the life of some typical nun disciples. It can\r\nbe said that the Order of Nuns have played an important role in spreading\r\nof true doctrines of the World Honored One. That the Buddha agreed to found the\r\nOrder of Nuns is a significant event in Buddhism’s history. It affirms rights\r\nof human and gender equality in Buddhism. However, this important meaning is\r\nrarely mentioned. The film “Going back to Enlightenment†is the first Buddhist\r\nfilm about life of Nuns and many important events which are not mentioned in\r\nprevious films. Through this film, people will perceive many practical values\r\nabout the life, lofty human values as well as noble teachings of the World\r\nHonored One.
In the film, there are many significant characters\r\nsuch as Maha Pajapati, who was the Buddha’s mother’s sister and the person\r\nbegging the Buddha for nun community to leave home, or the Nun Yasodhara, who\r\nused to be the virtuous wife of Siddharta. There is also an extraordinary story\r\nabout the leaving home event of a very special person that was Khema, King\r\nBimbisara’s second wife. Thanks to the Buddhs’s teaching and convert, this\r\nKing’s beautiful second wife abandoned vegetarianism, did not rely on her\r\nbeauty and leave all things to become an excellent nun (the nun Foremost in\r\nWisdom)
The story about Uppalavanna is also included in the film.\r\nThat was a beautiful girl, but she became a guilty person due to her hatred.\r\nHowever, thanks to Maudgalyayana’s help, she took refuge, joined the\r\norder and became a nun famous for the title of the First Supernatural\r\nPower. Patacara’s tragic destiny due to losing her husband, child and\r\nrelatives is reappeared in the film as an awakening about impermanence and\r\nmisery of this life. Besides leaving home disciples, the film also mentions\r\nefficient Dharma guardians such asVisakha, Queen Vaidehi, or villains such as\r\nSundari, Cinca, who had conspiracy against the Buddha and the Order but always\r\nfailed.
It can be said that this film has many interesting details,\r\ngood and meaningful stories. Characters’ words usually come\r\nwith philosophy; especially the World Honored One’ teachings are\r\nconveyed gently, minutely and easy to be received. Besides, while making this\r\nfilm, Nun PhD Thich Nu Lieu Phap will be the advisor of the film crew. The Nun\r\nwill directly go with the crew while filming to readjust the contents to avoid\r\nregrettable mistakes. She also translates the film into English when it is\r\ncompleted.
